Everything parents need to know to have a successful school year.
All the Important Details
In the beginning of the year, I send home this handout with info that Parents should know about our class. Click here for another copy.
Absences
When students are absent, they are responsible for making up the work. Students will have an Absent Folder on their desk when they return. Students have the same number of days they were gone (for example, if John misses two days of school, he would have two days after he returned to school to make up the work) to complete this work. Much of our classroom activities cannot be done at home (group work, experiments, in-class games, buddy class activities, etc), so regular attendance is encouraged. Please send a note explaining the absence when your child returns, or just email me.
If you know ahead of time that your child will miss school, and give me at least a day's notice, I'll get work together to bring with you. If you are going on an educational trip and want the absence excused, please get the form ahead of time from the office.

Curriculum
We learn so much in 4th grade. Click here to find out all the objectives for the year.
Next year Wake County will be switching over to the Common Core Standards which will be used (almost) nationwide, but this year we will continue with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. So scroll down the page to find that.

Grading
The current Wake County grading system is so very different from what it was when we were kids. Please see below for an explanation.
Level 4 - Extends targeted grade level standards: the student is exceeding grade level expectations set by the state. (He has got it and is thirsty for more)
Level 3* - Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standards with evidence of application over time: the student meets the grade level expectations set by the state with some evidence of exceeding expectations. (He has got it and sometimes stretches for more)
Level 3 - Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standard: the student meets the grade level expectations set by the state and has the necessary skills and concepts to be successful in the next grade or quarter. (He has got it. He is solid)
Level 2 - Inconsistent and needs support to meet targeted grade level standards: the student has not yet met grade level expectations set by the state and does not have the necessary skills and concepts to be successful in the next grade or quarter. The student still needs teacher support to be successful with the concept or skill; the student is not yet independent. This should alert parents that close communication is needed for further student support. (Not passing, but getting there)
Level 1 - Insufficient performance of targeted grade level standards with support: the student has not yet met grade level expectations set by the state and that a student does not have the necessary skills and concepts to be successful in the next grade or quarter. This should alert parents that close communication is needed for further student support. (Not passing and has a long way to go to get there)

Schedules
School Year Calendar-we follow the Wake County Traditional Calendar.
Specials Rotation Calendar-Since we are on a 6 day rotation, it is sometimes hard to figure out what special we have on a given day, and therefore whether to send in sneakers, a recorder, or supplies for art. Once you get to the school website, click on Specials Rotation Calendar.
For our class:
A= Study Island
B= PE
C= Media/Guidance
D= Technology
E= Art
F= Music
Daily Schedule-please note, this is a general schedule but it may change during the day as needs require.

Printable Worksheets
Sometimes you really want your child to do some "paper and pencil" practice on a topic. This website and this website have great worksheets on MANY topics.
