Imagine! Explore!! Discover!!!
Hello! I am Maria McMahon but everyone calls me Emmie. I came to Lone Star Elementary in 2014, and I love it! I recieved my BS in teaching from UNC-Chapel Hill, where I learned about the value of education, not to mention the appreciation for a particular shade of blue.
In 2009 I earned National Board Certification, which is kind of like earning a master's degree, without any professors to help you, and you do all that work in 1 year! It was incredibly hard and I am very proud of achieving it. It truly transformed my teaching and my understanding of children.
Before ending up in Jacksonville, I taught for 18 years in North Carolina, 6 in south Florida and 1 in South Carolina; in public, private, and even a charter school. I have taught every grade K-5 but I think 3rd is my favorite!
I love teaching, especially seeing students discover the spark for learning that I believe was inside them all along. To me, everything is a discovery-an adventure to be had! I hope my students develop a lifelong curiosity that extends beyond the classroom. I work to create an environment in which learning is fun, collaboration is encouraged and students feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes.
When children are curious, the classroom is rich with possibilities, and the teacher loves to teach, imagine what is possible!
